トモ都市美術館 – 都市をたずねる114「銀座で歯をみがいてみよう！」- “Let’s Brush Our Teeth in Ginza!”

4/18（土）に、トモ都市美術館企画で、「銀座で歯をみがいてみよう！」をやってみます。誰にでも、街を歩いていて「今どうしても歯をみがきたい！」という状況が年に何回かある気がします（？！）。ただ、公共の場で実際に歯をみがいている人を見たことはほとんどありません！それだけ歯みがきがプライベートな行為ということなのでしょう。
今回は歯ブラシを持参して、路上での歯みがきを実践してみます。場所は美しく整然とした街並みが続く銀座。1888年に、日本で初めて「練り歯みがき」を販売したという資生堂に集合して、歯みがき可能な場所を探しながら歩きましょう。
駅のトイレなどで「歯みがき禁止」という張り紙を見かけますが、路上でそれを見たことはありません。ルールだらけの最近の公園ですら「歯みがき禁止」とは書かれていない。その意味でも、この「禁止されていないけれど誰もやらない微妙な行為」を通じて、公と私について考えてみる機会になればと思います。歯をみがける場所を見つけることができれば、銀座で自分だけの場所を見つけられたといえるかもしれません！

On Saturday, April 18, TOMO City Museum presents: Let’s Brush Our Teeth in Ginza!. I’m sure we all have those moments a few times a year while walking down the street when we think, “I desperately need to brush my teeth right now!” (?!) Yet, you almost never see anyone actually doing it in public! It just proves how intensely private the act of tooth-brushing is considered to be. 
For this experiment, bring your own toothbrush as we take this private routine to the streets. Our stage is the beautifully orderly district of Ginza. We’ll meet up at Shiseido—which happens to be where Japan’s first toothpaste was sold in 1888—and wander the area in search of a “brushable” spot. 
You often see “No Toothbrushing” signs in station restrooms, but never out on the street. Even today’s hyper-regulated parks don’t explicitly ban it. By performing this “awkward act that isn’t prohibited but nobody does,” I hope we can playfully rethink the boundaries between public and private spaces in the city. If we manage to find a spot to brush, we might just be carving out our own little personal sanctuary in Ginza! 
Feel free to drop in or leave anytime. I wonder who will show up? If nobody comes, Tomotosi will just be out there brushing alone.
