Spaces Without Context

初めて訪れる海外の町で、言いようのない自由を感じることがある。知り合いもいなければ馴染みの店もない、もちろん思い出もない。逆説的ではあるが、この自由は「そこに住む」ことで損なわれるのである。では「自由に住む」ことは不可能なのだろうか？日本で最も人口密度の高いエリアといえる新宿歌舞伎町で、非住人的に住むことの提案。（2006年度卒業設計）

When visiting a foreign town for the first time, I sometimes feel an indescribable sense of freedom—no acquaintances, no familiar stores, and no memories. Yet paradoxically, this freedom fades the moment I begin to “live” there. Is it truly impossible to live freely? This project explores an alternative way of inhabiting Shinjuku Kabukicho, Japan’s most densely populated district, without the constraints of traditional residency. (Diploma, 2006)
