地図と空図 / the SKY MAP
「地図」には建物や道路が記されています。 それらは誰にでも理解できる目印です。
その上短期間では変化しません。 つまり普遍的であり永続的であるため建物や道路は「地図」に採用されているのです。その証拠に、この旅で東京中を自転車で廻ったときに使用した「地図」は８年前に発行されたものでしたが、問題なく使えました。 (画像下)
わたしたちが普段当たり前のように使っている「地図」。 それに対して、今回は「空図」という形式を考えました。(画像中)
一日で23区役所を巡り、各敷地内から空の写真を撮ることで「空図」は完成しました。
空は常にその形や色や明るさを変え、二度と同じ姿を見せません。
つまり空の写真は、「その日その時間その場所その人」にしか撮れない、完全にオリジナルなものです。 これは個別的であり瞬間的なことであると言えます。両極端にある「地図」と「空図」を並べて見たときに、地と空の間で生活している「人間」のことについて考えずにはいられません。わたしたちは普遍的であり永続的であること、個別的であり瞬間的なことの狭間で生きているのです。
Must Maps Be Universal and Lasting?
We usually think of maps as pieces of paper with buildings and roads drawn on them—stable structures that remain unchanged for years. But what if a map could capture something more fleeting?
The artist proposes an alternative: the SKY MAP. He traveled to all 23 ward offices in central Tokyo, completing this challenging journey in a single day—despite using a bicycle with broken brakes. At each ward office, he photographed both the building and the sky above it. (Image: middle)
The skies varied dramatically depending on the time and location. The SKY MAP captures these unique moments—images that no one else could replicate at any other time. In contrast, he navigated this journey using a map he had purchased eight years ago, which remained just as reliable and useful today as when he first bought it. (Image: below)
