“City of Pet” – ATAMI ART GRANT 2023
This exhibition takes place in a building filled with pet-related businesses—an animal hospital, a pet business college, and a pet hotel & spa. The first-floor exhibition space was originally intended to be a pet café. In this “Pet Building,” I explore the idea of a pet-like existence. The video works are divided into sections, and photographic works are arranged in a grid, mirroring the way cages are stacked in pet stores.
Text from the exhibition:
A pet’s life is entirely shaped by whether it is loved or not—a reflection of extreme inequality. The image of a middle-aged man (Tomotosi) charming audiences on social media parallels that of an unsold pet. Beyond individuals, even cities take on pet-like qualities. Safe, secure, and “cute” cities are in high demand. As a long-standing tourist destination, Atami has always been under the gaze of outsiders, making it a prime example of this phenomenon. This work examines middle-aged men and cities through the perspective of pets in extreme circumstances.

「ATAMI ART GRANT 2023」参加作品
ぼくが展示している会場の建物は、熱海動物愛護病院、国際ペットビジネス専門学校、ペットホテル＆スパ The Laxと、ペット関連のテナントが多く入っています。さらに１階の展示会場はもともとペットカフェになる予定だった場所。この「ペットビル」で、ペット的な状況について考える展示をしています。ペットショップでケージが積み重ねられている展示方法を参考にして、映像を分割したり、写真作品をグリッド状に構成して展示しています。
以下は会場に貼ってあるテキストです。
「シティ・オブ・ペット」
ペットの一生は、人に愛される要素を持っているか否かで激変する。超格差社会。SNSで愛嬌を振りまくおっさん（トモトシ）と、売れ残ったペットのイメージが重なる。もっと言えば、都市そのものだってペットっぽい。安全安心で、かわいい街は大人気。観光地として、外からの視線を感じてきた熱海は、その道のトップランナーかもしれない。エクストリームな境遇にあるペットの立場から、おっさんと都市について考えてみたい。
