Broken Windows Practice





「建物の窓が壊れているのを放置すると、誰も注意を払っていないというサインになり、まもなく他の窓も壊されてしまう。心理的抵抗が薄れることから他の犯罪が増え、犯罪が連鎖して最終的には強盗や放火といった凶悪犯罪にまで繋がる」

私は街頭において、アメリカの犯罪学者ジョージ・ケリングが提唱したこの理論の実践・記録を試みました。
1.人が集まる場所にゴミを置く
2.ゴミの周囲を一定時間毎に撮影する
3.撮れた画像を時系列に並べる

「みんな捨ててるのだから私もいいだろう」という心理が集まったゴミによって可視化されることになり、セオリーが正しいことが実証されました。

“If a window is broken and left unrepaired, people will conclude that no one cares.
The tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building and perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.”

I put this theory into practice through a simple experiment:

  1. I placed an empty can on a busy street.
  2. I took a photo of it every twenty minutes.
  3. I arranged the photos in chronological order.

There’s no reason to feel guilty about doing something if everyone else is doing it. The growing pile of garbage visualized this unconscious mindset and demonstrated how the theory plays out in real life.

This project received an award in the Eco Japan Cup 2014 (Art Category).
