Exhibition Overview by MBO / MBO
Cities are continuously shaped by invisible rules and systems that quietly organize our bodies, behaviors, and relationships. Tomotosi’s practice begins by placing his own body directly into these urban structures. Rather than confronting grand historical narratives or political discourses head-on, he reveals the cracks and gaps embedded within everyday systems through minor, absurd actions, repeated collisions, and slightly misaligned gestures.
Set in Seoul, this exhibition gathers and reconfigures the structures of mobility and consumption, cooperation and competition, as well as the gaze of the crowd. By twisting and rearranging these elements, it temporarily introduces alternative rhythms into the existing order of the city.
Throughout the works, Tomotosi’s body continuously collides with boundaries. He rents a traditional Hanbok at a shop near Gyeongbokgung Palace and, while still wearing the garment, travels back and forth between the Japanese Imperial Palace and South Korea’s Gyeongbokgung (casually eating gimbap at the Imperial Palace while he is at it). Through such interventions, borders of nation, language, culture, and institution are sometimes traversed in a comical, humorous manner, while at other times, their sheer existence is laid bare through physical collisions and repetitive actions.
Curated by the duo MBO, this exhibition unfolds with the design philosophy of the G-SHOCK serving as its underlying framework. Ultimately, the gallery will be filled with the tension and laughter, intimacy and awkwardness that emerge from these processes of collision.

Curatorial Statement by Young Hwang / Young Hwang
I visited Japan to work on an additional MBO project. While looking for a place to stay, I was introduced to Tomotosi through Ishige and ended up staying at his studio. Living together, we spent a great deal of time talking about each other’s practices. I found his documentary-style performances, staged within the context of the city, particularly compelling.
Cities are built upon countless rules, and people move through them by unconsciously following those rules. Tomotosi creates small openings within these structures and playfully inserts himself into them, stirring things up from within. I see him as an artist who raises questions from a position somewhere between discomfort and absurdity. For example, in Tomo City Museum, he gathered participants to walk barefoot together through Tokyo’s Ginza district, or organized workshops in which people brushed their teeth together in the middle of the street.
Although Tomotosi had already presented an exhibition in Gwangju, South Korea, I began to wonder what might happen if these city-based works were developed in Seoul. While Seoul shares many characteristics with Tokyo as a densely populated metropolis, the culture, temperament, and behaviors of the people who inhabit it reveal a distinctly different texture. I became interested in seeing how Tomotosi would perceive and interpret those differences through his own perspective, and what new questions might emerge from that encounter.

Curatorial Statement by Ishige Kenta /
I usually make a living in Tokyo by producing exhibitions, creating artworks, and conducting fieldwork. In doing so, my tools and gear wear out and break at a speed that often surprises my friends. Asphalt, concrete, iron, and glass—the materials that make up the city are all incredibly rigid. Working within this colossal mass, a dropped phone screen shatters, shoe soles wear down from friction against the pavement, and the seams of bags packed with heavy equipment unravel. To operate while rubbing against the city as a rigid body is to encounter microscopic destruction on a daily basis. Therefore, I always need resilient gear that can withstand impacts and friction, and my choice of watch has long been CASIO’s G-SHOCK (I am already on my third one).
The “Shock Resist” (shock-resistant structure) at the core of this unbreakable watch’s design philosophy does not mean encasing everything in rigid materials. Rather, it refers to a unique physical engineering that deflects shock by introducing a hollow structure that suspends the watch’s heart with only a few tiny protrusions. One day, while blankly staring at the words “SHOCK RESIST” on my G-SHOCK’s bezel, it suddenly occurred to me: this built-in function of “resisting collisions with the city through a hollow structure” shares a distinct resonance with Tomotosi’s past activities, this exhibition in Seoul, and by extension, the very nature of artistic expression within urban spaces.
Tomotosi is an artist born in 1983, the exact same year the G-SHOCK was released. Whether by wearing a uniform purchased on a flea market site to work guerrilla shifts at a convenience store, or by posing as a parking attendant to guide users in a bicycle lot just to arrange the bikes into a rainbow gradient, he has consistently intervened in urban systems and structures with his own body, conjuring a sense of hollow humor and paradoxical questions on-site. Instead of crashing head-on to demand change, Tomotosi has repeatedly staged what can only be called shock-resistant practices within the city by preparing countless absurd and nihilistic structures.
In his current practice in Seoul, what Tomotosi confronts is not merely urban regulations. It is a colossal, rigid mass: the history and nationality between Japan and South Korea, which remains extremely unyielding and continues to generate intense friction. Against this rigid body, Tomotosi deploys an eerie hollow space—evoking neither pure laughter nor pure bewilderment—to defuse the friction and explore techniques for enduring the shock.
Furthermore, the venue for this exhibition, “studiya.”, is an independent gallery and an alternative space. It can be viewed as an institutional hollow space, temporarily suspended from the direct interventions of the city and politics. Not a place for direct political action, “studiya.” is a white cube within the city that accommodates experimental practices and forms of expression that have yet to be defined. Not a site for direct political action, it operates as a space where such practices can be temporarily held—an environment inherently equipped with shock-resistant properties.
Housing Tomotosi’s shock-resistant practice inside this space creates a double shock-resistant structure. This exhibition may well become the very protective gear we need to plunge back into endless friction, time and again, and repeatedly endure the collisions ahead.
Numerous workshops are scheduled during his stay in Seoul. Instead of colliding with massive constructs like nations or history and facing destruction, please come and experience this “Shock Resist”—using the hollow space as a weapon to survive.

studiya.
