New Nights

本作は、トモトシが毎晩東京スカイツリーを望む場所へと足を運び、消灯の瞬間（深夜0時）を撮影し続けた記録である。集められたそれぞれの64の映像は画面上に分割配置され、すべての消灯時間が同期した映像作品となっている。
煌々と夜空を照らしていた日本一のタワーが、突如として暗闇に沈む姿は、かつての成長神話がとうに機能しなくなった「失われた30年」の現実を象徴するかのようだ。だが一方でそれは、際限のない拡張から降り、身の丈に合った経済や生活のあり方を模索してきた近年の日本の成熟を肯定する、静かなイメージへと反転するかもしれない。

This work records Tomotosi traveling each night to different locations where Tokyo Skytree could be seen, filming the moment it goes dark at midnight. The 64 recordings are arranged across a single screen, synchronized so that all the lights go out at the same moment.
The tallest tower in Japan, shining brightly over the night sky, suddenly falls into darkness. The image may evoke the reality of Japan’s “lost decades,” in which its once-powerful myth of economic growth has long ceased to function. At the same time, it may also turn into a quiet image affirming Japan’s recent maturity—a country that has stepped away from endless expansion and sought more sustainable ways of living and sustaining its economy.
