Shibuya to Shinjuku in 100 Steps”

On Saturday, February 7, TOMO City Museum will host Shibuya to Shinjuku in 100 Steps. The idea is super simple: walk from Shibuya to Shinjuku while keeping your step count within 100 steps.
Many of us track steps for health and fitness, and more steps are usually seen as better. This time we do the opposite—try to make your steps as few as possible. Walk extremely slowly, shuffle, choose flatter routes, take big jumps—whatever works. Let’s “trick” the step counter and move through the city.
Shibuya to Shinjuku is about 4 km. Normally it takes around an hour and about 5,000 steps. Let’s see how close we can get to 1/50 of that by experimenting with our own strategies. You might notice a different side of the city along the way.
Any pedometer is fine—phone or any other device. Join or leave anytime. Everyone is welcome. If no one shows up, I’ll do it alone.

Great job on the 3-hour walk! It was a super tough challenge made harder by the snow, but totally worth it. We figured out some funny pedometer quirks—hills and crowds add steps, but surprisingly, so does talking (probably because we get distracted!). Also, the iPhone pedometer is way too sensitive! It caught every single sneaky step. Walking at 1/3 our normal speed, Hiraoka-san got an awesome 444 steps! We couldn’t hit 100, but still a great score. Walking super slow in fast-paced Tokyo was really eye-opening. We noticed ground patterns, read all the signs, and really felt the city’s vibe. Being hyper-aware of how we walk was so refreshing. Definitely wanna try this in another town!
